Leaky Gut
Leaky gut opens the door to a barrage of physical complaints. Friendly bacteria protect the mucous lining of the intestines, forming a barrier that serves as your natural immune defense system. Conversely, harmful bacteria exude toxins that cause gut inflammation and weaken the normally tight junctions of the gut wall cells. Toxins, unfriendly bacteria, food proteins, yeasts and abnormal immune stimulating chemicals can then permeate the compromised gut barrier.
In an ironic twist, antibiotic therapy contributes to this dilemma by killing both detrimental and protective bacteria, leaving an open playing field for a proliferation of harmful microorganisms to mount their attack.
Bacteria and yeast invade the bloodstream and can initiate infection anywhere in the body. Large food proteins pass through the gut wall and the body's defense system interprets them as harmful invaders. Plaguing food allergies develop. Leakage of toxins burdens the liver, and chemical sensitivity may arise.
To counter this process, you can "plug" the leaks in your defense. How? Boost your levels of beneficial bacteria by taking probiotic supplements. When ample "friendly bacteria" are covering the intestinal walls, the invaders are not able to enter the body by penetrating the lining of the GI tract.
